Selling a closed company's Slack or Teams archive

The company has closed, or will soon, yet someone is still paying for a workspace full of years of Slack or Microsoft Teams messages.

AI buyers will license that message history. They have bought it from tiny startups and bid on the biggest archive ever put up for sale.

In a small business, chat is frequently the fullest account of how choices were made: requests, replies, and the path from a reported problem to its fix. AI buyers want precisely that to train AI agents.

02

What chat archives have sold for

cielo24 licensed 13 years of Slack, Jira and email, with the price reported in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Per MIT Technology Review, Mercor has gone after the Slack and Jira archives of closed startups. Through SimpleClosure, most wind-down data deals fall between $10K and $100K.

03

Teams at scale: the Spirit filings

The Spirit Airlines records include 500M Teams items, roughly 100M emails, and SharePoint and OneDrive content. No larger Microsoft 365 archive has been put in front of AI buyers, as far as we know. Google's $10.0M bid won and awaits the judge. See what Spirit's archive holds.

Keep the archive intact until it sells

  • Keep the paid plan running. Downgrading or cancelling can hide or delete older history.
  • Do not delete channels or users before an export or a buyer's review.
  • Note how many years of history you have and how many people used it.
  • Check customer contracts and NDAs for anything shared in shared channels.
  • Ask the buyer whether they want an export or read-only access.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Can I sell my closed company's Slack history?

Yes, if the company owns it and contracts allow it. Buyers including Mercor and SimpleClosure's marketplace have taken Slack archives from closed startups.

What is a Slack archive worth?

SimpleClosure's wind-down data deals mostly fall between $10K and $100K. Reports put cielo24's 13 years of records in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Should I export Slack before cancelling?

Keep the workspace running until a buyer has reviewed it. Cancelling can remove history, and buyers may prefer direct read-only access.
