Selling a company email archive after a closure
The business is closed, yet the Google Workspace or mail server keeps running. Three things to settle before selling the mailboxes: the size of the archive, who controls it today, and whether a given buyer accepts email.
01
What a very large archive looks like
Spirit Airlines' filings list roughly 100M emails in 80,000 accounts and 175,658 employee records reaching back to 1986. The $10.0M Google bid won, and the judge is due to rule on 2026-11-06.
Almost no company comes near that volume. For a smaller seller the pattern counts more than the size: years of named teams writing to each other, files attached, tracing how work progressed.
02
Corporate email has been studied before
Roughly 500,000 Enron messages from about 150 people, most of them executives, became public when regulators released them mid-investigation, and researchers have relied on them since. What has changed is that an archive can now earn its owner money instead of simply being published. See the Enron email dataset.
Enron also proves a company's story can be told through a small number of inboxes. Years of genuine work from a small team can still be valuable.
03

Which buyers take email
Most buyers that license work archives list email alongside chat, documents and tickets. Some prefer email with attachments, others want a mix of sources. Check each buyer's review: micro1, Mercor, Pewter. For Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 specifics, see the Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 guides.
FAQ
Questions, answered
Can a closed company sell its old emails?
Often yes, if the company still controls the accounts and no contract, NDA or privacy rule blocks it. In bankruptcy, the trustee or court decides.
How big was Spirit's email archive?
Roughly 100M emails in 80,000 mailboxes, per the list attached to the flight attendants' objection.
What if the email accounts were already cancelled?
The data may be deleted. Check with the provider quickly, since some keep data for a short period after cancellation.
