Customer data
Selling a customer database? AI data buyers want something else
If you are trying to sell a customer database, AI data buyers are the wrong audience. They say they remove personal data before anything is licensed, and some refuse data you hold for clients outright.
What they do pay for is the service record wrapped around that database: how your team handled requests, solved problems and closed the loop.
01
What data buyers leave out
- Names, emails, phone numbers and addresses of customers
- Payment details and account numbers
- Health records and sensitive employee files
- Data you hold for clients under their own contracts (often excluded entirely)
Most buyers hire a specialist firm for de-identification and show you a sample to approve before anything goes out.
02
The service record around the database
Procedures, call notes, email chains and tickets teach an AI agent how a real business looks after its customers. That is the asset buyers put a price on. Their published bands for trading companies mostly fall between $100K and $2M, which is a rough guide only.
03
Customer data sales happen in distress
Every recorded customer database sale we found came out of a collapse, packaged with the brand. Zulily's sold for $4.5M along with its app code, social accounts and trademarks. After objections, RadioShack's buyer walked away with only 7 out of 170 fields and two years of email.

Questions to put to any data buyer
- Is this a license of a copy, or a sale of the records outright?
- Is it exclusive, and for how long? Can I license the same data elsewhere later?
- Which systems and date ranges are in scope, and can I leave folders or whole tools out?
- Who removes names and personal details, how, and do I approve a sample before anything leaves?
- When does payment arrive, and does the clock start at signing or at your acceptance of the delivery?
- Do I pay anything, and does anyone in the chain take a cut?
- How long do you keep the copy, and what happens to it if you are acquired?
FAQ
Questions, answered
Do AI companies buy customer databases?
Not as lists. They license operating records with customer details removed.
What do they buy instead?
Tickets, email, chat, call notes, SOPs and project history that show how the work gets done.
Does the whole database transfer?
Not always. Objections in the RadioShack case cut the transfer to just 7 out of 170 fields.
Is health or employee data ever included?
Sensitive health and employee records are commonly excluded by the buyers themselves. Confirm in writing.
Can we license records that mention our customers?
Only if your privacy notice and contracts allow it. A lawyer should review both before any sample goes out.
