Know the difference

A client list says who you serve. A data license shows how

Owners often assume an AI data license means selling the customer list. It does not. A client list is names, contacts and the revenue attached to them. A data license covers how your team does the work, with personal details removed.

The two are valued differently, bought by different companies and governed by different rules.

02

When customer data itself has been sold

Customer data does change hands, but mostly when companies fail, and usually packaged with the brand. Zulily's customer files went for $4.5M together with its app code, domains and trademarks, through an assignment for the benefit of creditors. In the RadioShack bankruptcy, objections whittled the buyer's haul down to 7 out of 170 data fields plus two years of email.

Those are brand sales, not useful comparisons for an operating-data license.

03

How each one is priced

Appraisers price a customer list on the future revenue it should bring, a method well established in M&A. Licensing data has no standard formula yet, so every deal gets priced individually. For trading companies, buyers' published bands sit mostly at $100K to $2M.

Questions to put to any data buyer

  • Is this a license of a copy, or a sale of the records outright?
  • Is it exclusive, and for how long? Can I license the same data elsewhere later?
  • Which systems and date ranges are in scope, and can I leave folders or whole tools out?
  • Who removes names and personal details, how, and do I approve a sample before anything leaves?
  • When does payment arrive, and does the clock start at signing or at your acceptance of the delivery?
  • Do I pay anything, and does anyone in the chain take a cut?
  • How long do you keep the copy, and what happens to it if you are acquired?

FAQ

Questions, answered

How is a client list sale different from an AI data license?

A client list sale gives away who your customers are. An AI license shares a scrubbed copy of how your people do their jobs.

Do AI companies buy customer lists?

No. What they want is the work itself. Buyers on our list strip personal details out (some hire an outside firm for it) before anything is used.

Could the list go to one party and the data license to another?

In business terms they are separate assets. Your lawyer should check whether the list sale contract limits any later license.

What have customer databases sold for?

Mostly in failures, packaged with the brand. Zulily's, sold alongside its app code and trademarks, fetched $4.5M.

What could a license pay?

For a business that is still trading, most buyers publish bands of roughly $100K to $2M. Treat those as marketing claims. They are no price for you. Only a written offer from a buyer whose criteria you meet tells you what your data is worth.
