Process
How much of your team's time a data license takes
Your office manager and IT person can't vanish for a month, and with records already on file they won't need to. Buyers estimate an hour or a few of the owner's time.

Who does what
Owner

Reviewing the agreement, ideally from the start
| Person | Their part |
|---|---|
| Owner | Two or three calls, deciding exclusions, reading the offer, signing |
| Office manager | Knowing where things are and which folders or customers are sensitive |
| IT person or provider | The export, or approving read-only access |
| Your lawyer | Reviewing the agreement, ideally from the start |
Frankfurt Kurnit's checklist recommends involving legal, privacy, HR and communications at the start. At a small firm, that could just mean you plus an outside lawyer.
02
Buyer collection saves time, exporting keeps control
Certain buyers get read-only access to sources you pick, or ask your team to log in to approved systems so no passwords change hands. That saves your IT person most of the work. Exporting the files yourself takes longer but keeps you in control of exactly what leaves.
03
When a deal asks for new work
Not every deal is about archives. One micro1 option pays your staff to write prompts and review answers, an ongoing task instead of a single handover, so charge for that time separately.
04
What makes it take longer
- Paper that needs scanning
- Records split across several companies
- Sensitive records that need sorting
FAQ
Questions, answered
How much time does licensing company data take?
By buyers' own estimates, an hour to a few hours for the owner, plus some IT time.
Does my IT person have to do the export?
Not always. Some buyers collect through read-only access to approved sources.
Is staff time ever part of the deal?
In some programs, such as employees writing prompts for micro1. Treat that as separate paid work.
