Selling a physical therapy practice? The central office playbook is the asset

A buyer of a physical therapy group pays for clinics, therapists and referral relationships. AI data buyers are interested in the central office: intake, authorisations, scheduling and the procedures that keep many clinics running the same way.

Plans of care and patient records stay out.

01

Front-office procedures over patient charts

  • Intake and verification steps
  • Authorisation and visit-limit tracking
  • Scheduling rules across clinics
  • Staff training and front desk scripts

02

One clinic or a regional group?

A single clinic usually falls under the 20 to 30 person floor most buyers set. A regional group with a shared central office is a much better fit.

Some buyers currently exclude healthcare companies entirely. Others focus on it, and Protege works with healthcare data through its partnership with hc1. Patient records are never what is licensed.

03

What it could pay, and the effort involved

Nobody publishes a price specific to physical therapy. Buyers' own general bands mostly sit at $100K to $2M. Once privacy and scope are agreed, the owner's part is chiefly an export of about 1 to 3 hours.

Questions to put to any data buyer

  • Is this a license of a copy, or a sale of the records outright?
  • Is it exclusive, and for how long? Can I license the same data elsewhere later?
  • Which systems and date ranges are in scope, and can I leave folders or whole tools out?
  • Who removes names and personal details, how, and do I approve a sample before anything leaves?
  • When does payment arrive, and does the clock start at signing or at your acceptance of the delivery?
  • Do I pay anything, and does anyone in the chain take a cut?
  • How long do you keep the copy, and what happens to it if you are acquired?

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do data buyers take PT practices?

Some take healthcare administration records and some exclude healthcare. Ask each one.

Is my company big enough?

The usual floor is somewhere from 20 to 30 staff. Some buyers publish none at all. Mode accepts law firms with 6 people and accounting firms with 10, and Pewter goes by your highest-ever headcount. Our match quiz sorts it out in two minutes.

Are plans of care included?

No. Patient records are excluded and identifiers removed.

Do I pay anything to license?

Typically no. Direct buyers rarely charge sellers. Middlemen are different: brokers and marketplaces may keep anywhere from 8% to 30%. Have any fee written down before a sample changes hands.
