Selling a CPA practice? AI buyers care about how you work
The firm buying your practice values fee income and how many clients stay. AI companies value the writing your team has produced over years: review notes, close checklists, standard letters and the internal questions behind every judgement.
That process record can be licensed, with client tax information kept out.

From review notes to engagement email
- Review notes and sign-off checklists
- Engagement letters and template correspondence
- Close and reconciliation procedures
- Internal questions and how seniors answered them
02
Is my firm big enough?
Mode accepts accounting practices of 10 or more, far below the common 20 to 30 bar, and some buyers set no floor.
03
Client tax data comes first
Tax return data comes with strict rules. Read CPA Practice Advisor's October 2026 article on the questions to resolve before client tax information goes anywhere near AI. Buyers state that they exclude client data and strip personal details.

What accounting firms say they were paid
Pewter says a 60-person accounting firm was paid $350,000 and lists an accounting group at $280K. It names no buyer and says its figures repeat others' statements without independent checks.

Questions to put to any data buyer
- Is this a license of a copy, or a sale of the records outright?
- Is it exclusive, and for how long? Can I license the same data elsewhere later?
- Which systems and date ranges are in scope, and can I leave folders or whole tools out?
- Who removes names and personal details, how, and do I approve a sample before anything leaves?
- When does payment arrive, and does the clock start at signing or at your acceptance of the delivery?
- Do I pay anything, and does anyone in the chain take a cut?
- How long do you keep the copy, and what happens to it if you are acquired?
FAQ
Questions, answered
What have accounting firms been paid?
Pewter cites $350,000 for a 60-person firm and $280K for another accounting group. Neither is verified, and no buyer is named.
Is my company big enough?
The usual floor is somewhere from 20 to 30 staff. Some buyers publish none at all. Mode accepts law firms with 6 people and accounting firms with 10, and Pewter goes by your highest-ever headcount. Our match quiz sorts it out in two minutes.
Can we license anything involving client tax returns?
Treat tax return information as out of scope unless your counsel says otherwise.
Do I pay anything to license?
Typically no. Direct buyers rarely charge sellers. Middlemen are different: brokers and marketplaces may keep anywhere from 8% to 30%. Have any fee written down before a sample changes hands.
