Selling a bookkeeping business? The month-end record has its own buyers

Whoever buys your bookkeeping practice is paying for monthly recurring clients. Your mailbox holds something else: years of quick back-and-forths on coding a transaction, chasing a reconciliation gap and getting answers out of clients.

AI companies license records like these to teach AI agents how month-end work really happens. The ledgers themselves stay with your clients.

Month-end routines and client threads

  • Month-end and year-end close checklists
  • Coding questions and the answers clients gave
  • Reconciliation notes and fixes
  • Onboarding templates and internal training

Pewter says a 60-person accounting firm was paid $350,000 and lists an accounting group at $280K. It names no buyer and says its figures repeat others' statements without independent checks.

02

Is my firm big enough?

Floors usually sit between 20 and 30 staff. Mode accepts accounting practices from 10, and some buyers set none. A one-person bookkeeper selling clients will not qualify. A staffed firm with years in shared systems frequently will.

03

Clients' books stay with the clients

General ledgers, bank feeds and tax data belong to your clients. Buyers say data held for clients is excluded and personal details removed. Your own process, templates and the anonymised Q&A are what is licensed.

Questions to put to any data buyer

  • Is this a license of a copy, or a sale of the records outright?
  • Is it exclusive, and for how long? Can I license the same data elsewhere later?
  • Which systems and date ranges are in scope, and can I leave folders or whole tools out?
  • Who removes names and personal details, how, and do I approve a sample before anything leaves?
  • When does payment arrive, and does the clock start at signing or at your acceptance of the delivery?
  • Do I pay anything, and does anyone in the chain take a cut?
  • How long do you keep the copy, and what happens to it if you are acquired?

FAQ

Questions, answered

Have bookkeeping firms been paid for data?

No bookkeeping-specific deal has been published. The nearest figures are Pewter's accounting firm examples of $350,000 and $280K, unverified.

Is my company big enough?

The usual floor is somewhere from 20 to 30 staff. Some buyers publish none at all. Mode accepts law firms with 6 people and accounting firms with 10, and Pewter goes by your highest-ever headcount. Our match quiz sorts it out in two minutes.

What could a license pay?

For a business that is still trading, most buyers publish bands of roughly $100K to $2M. Treat those as marketing claims. They are no price for you. Only a written offer from a buyer whose criteria you meet tells you what your data is worth.

Do I pay anything to license?

Typically no. Direct buyers rarely charge sellers. Middlemen are different: brokers and marketplaces may keep anywhere from 8% to 30%. Have any fee written down before a sample changes hands.
