Spirit Airlines
Who objected to the Spirit data sale, and why
Six filings challenged or joined challenges to the Spirit records sale between 2026-08-18 and 2026-09-04. They came from AFA-CWA, Springshot, PAFCA, International Aero Engines, IAM with TWU Local 570, and ALPA.
Employee files and supplier documents in an archive are the likeliest source of objections.
01
The employee unions
The flight attendants' union (AFA-CWA) wanted its members' information left out, or at least tight rules on how it would be split off, used, profiled and shared, because the sale offered no employee-confidentiality filter. PAFCA, representing dispatchers, and IAM with TWU Local 570, representing mechanics and ground crews, backed that request.
ALPA, the pilots' union, said safety-program records could reveal which pilot was involved. According to Skift, it warned that this risk might make pilots less willing to file confidential FAA safety reports.
02
A software supplier and an engine maker
Springshot, which sold software to Spirit, pointed to a SaaS contract giving it ownership of data its product generates, while stressing it did not want the sale blocked. International Aero Engines said its own confidential material, which Spirit held under NDA, is outside the estate.
Both arguments apply to any company: supplier contracts and NDAs can limit what you are allowed to license. See vendor data ownership claims.
03
Lawmakers and a privacy group
Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Steven Horsford led 121 members of Congress in writing to the Spirit and Google CEOs. EPIC (the Electronic Privacy Information Center) submitted an amicus brief. The approval hearing has been rescheduled more than once.
04
What the objections have changed
Google pulled the timecard set plus four customer-facing sets without lowering its bid. The ombudsman went on to recommend approval, while noting her review left out employee and third-party risk, the very issue most objectors raised.
FAQ
Questions, answered
Who objected to the Spirit data sale?
Six filers between 2026-08-18 and 2026-09-04: ALPA, AFA-CWA, IAM with TWU Local 570, International Aero Engines, PAFCA and Springshot.
Why did the flight attendants object?
Either leave their data out or limit how it is used and passed on, since nothing in the sale screened for employee confidentiality.
What did the pilots argue?
That records from safety programs could reveal individual pilots, and that this risk might make crews less willing to report safety issues voluntarily.
How many lawmakers wrote about the sale?

Did the objections change the deal?
Yes. On 2026-09-09 Google removed the timecard set and four customer-facing sets and kept its $10.0M bid.
