Should you license company data to AI? Weighing the gains and the costs
In favour: money for records you have been paying to keep for years, no loans or new shareholders, and not much effort. Against: plenty of licenses run forever, trained models do not forget, people named in your files can sometimes be traced, and your staff may object.

What you gain
- Income from costs already paid. Years of servers, software and storage bills can finally return something. Buyers advertise mostly $100K to $2M for trading businesses.
- The data stays yours. micro1 says ownership remains with the company and the buyer receives a licensed copy.
- No borrowing, no dilution. Polyshares describes its payment as a single license fee, with no shareholding or loan attached.
- Little effort. It is largely an export job. Buyers estimate 1 to 3 hours of the owner's time, and most charge sellers no fee.
- You choose what goes. Nyne's ads let you hold back any folder, and SimpleClosure lets sellers mark material as excluded.
02
What it costs you
- Permanent rights. micro1's license is perpetual, irrevocable and can be sublicensed, so signing cannot be undone.
- Models do not forget. Your copy can be erased, but a trained model stays as it is. Researchers have shown that models sometimes reproduce training text exactly, contact details included.
- People can be traced. A 2019 study showed 15 demographic traits were enough to pinpoint 99.98% of Americans. Scrubbing lowers the risk without eliminating it.
- Your team may push back. The public reaction to companies selling old Slack messages was mostly negative, and Spirit's flight attendants' union formally opposed that airline's sale.
- Customers will ask. Brokers report that owners' first worry is whether customer details leave the building, and customers will raise the same point.
- It surfaces when you sell. A law firm advising sellers notes that any earlier data license comes up in due diligence, and the acquirer will want the paperwork.
- The final user may be hidden. Sellers frequently cannot find out which lab ends up with the records.

Who it suits
The best fit is a company of 30 or more people with years of orderly records, little client-confidential material and an owner willing to explain the decision to staff. Think of a 45-person logistics business with a decade of dispatch email.
It suits less well when most records are confidential to clients, as at a small law or medical practice, or when staff would see it as a breach of trust. In that case, hold off, or license only the least sensitive material, such as SOPs and procedure manuals.
FAQ
Questions, answered
Is licensing worthwhile?
For a company of 30+ people with years of records, it can be. Set the payment against the permanence of the license and how your team and customers are likely to respond.
What is the main drawback?
That it is permanent. Some licenses can never be withdrawn, and trained models remain even after your copy is deleted.
Will staff object?
Some might. Prepare an explanation, and think about excluding personal folders and private messages.
Will it complicate a future sale of the business?
It will come up. Any acquirer's diligence will ask about past data licenses, so keep the contract and your records of the deal.
