01

Is it one payment or a stream?

Some buyers pay a single amount after delivery. Others share revenue over time. Bring the contract clause that sets the schedule.

02

When does the money arrive?

Payment typically arrives three to six weeks after signing, sometimes later. Some buyers only pay after written acceptance of the delivery, which can push income into a different period than you expect.

03

Does the money go to the business or to you?

The license is normally signed by the company that owns the records, and payment goes to that company. If the business is being sold, who receives a payment that arrives after closing depends on your purchase agreement.

04

Fees in the chain

Direct buyers rarely charge the seller. Middlemen such as brokers and marketplaces may keep 8% to 30%, typically settled by the licensing party at closing. A buyer may also pay a fee to whoever referred you. Get each fee in writing so your adviser sees everything.

FAQ

Questions, answered

How quickly does a deal move?

Expect an offer in anything from several days to a fortnight. Money tends to arrive three to six weeks after you sign, occasionally longer, and a few buyers wait until they have accepted the delivered data.

Do I pay anything to license?

Typically no. Direct buyers rarely charge sellers. Middlemen are different: brokers and marketplaces may keep anywhere from 8% to 30%. Have any fee written down before a sample changes hands.

Who pays the broker?

Usually the licensing side at close. Ask who paid whom so your accountant can see the flows.

Is license income treated like sale proceeds?

That is exactly the question for your CPA. Bring the agreement, the payment dates and the recipient entity.
